Shungite

Stories and legends of Shungite

Shungite owes its name to the place from which it is extracted, namely a Russian village called Shunga, located on the shores of Lake Onega.

According to legend, Xenia Godunov, daughter of Tsar Boris Fyodorovich Godunov (1551-1605), could no longer have children. But after drinking water from a spring that gushed from black stones, she regained her fertility and founded a large family.

However, the virtues of this water had been known for at least five centuries thanks to a legend that tells of a star that crashed to Earth. This star then transformed into water.

Later, in the 18th century, the exploitation of the lake's beneficial properties and its stones developed thanks to Emperor Peter the Great (1672-1725). Initially, he traveled there with his physician to treat his fragile health. He took baths, drank shungite elixir, and his health greatly improved. He regained his vitality and energy.

He then decided to combat the dysentery that was afflicting his soldiers. He gave them shungite solutions, renamed Waters of Mars in honor of the Roman god of war. Then, during the last ten years of his life, he built a thermal spa near the springs and treated many people suffering from epilepsy or uremia. Thus were born the first thermal cures.

In 1996, Americans Robert Curl and Richard Smalley, along with Briton Harold Kroto, were awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. Their research led to the discovery of fullerenes (the third known form of carbon), found in thermal waters, which are beneficial for certain ailments. The use of shungite in natural preparations offers numerous health benefits.

Shungite exists in the form of two minerals:

  • Silver shungite, which is very rare, represents only 1% of all shungite. It has a very high fullerene content, approximately 98%.
  • Black shungite: the most widespread and most used and easiest to carve due to its low fullerene composition (between 50% and 70%).

It should be noted that when the concentration of fullerenes is less than 50%, it is referred to as shungite rock and not a shungite stone.

Some farmers mix shungite into the soil to create a natural mineral fertilizer. Shungite has the property of retaining moisture and provides calcium and phosphorus. Studies conducted on a few farms in Kazakhstan showed that yields increased by 20 to 40%.

Shungite has a hardness between 3.5 and 4 on the Mohs scale. In comparison, diamond has a hardness of 10, the highest on this same scale.

Its existence dates back more than two billion years. It is believed to have originated from the mineralization of plankton. Others claim that shungite is composed of fragments of the planet Phaethon, located between Mars and Jupiter. Phaethon was destroyed, giving rise to the asteroid belt. Finally, other researchers have discovered a volcanic origin for shungite.

The main shungite deposit is therefore located in Russia, in the village of Shunga, on the shores of Lake Onega.
